Articles credited to the The Top Football Editorial Desk are produced and maintained under a publication-level organizational byline. The byline is not a fictional person and does not imply personal credentials.

Ranking methodology

Each ranking states its deciding factors. Depending on the question, these can include peak performance, longevity, role difficulty, strength of opposition, competition context, tactical influence and cultural impact. No single statistic automatically determines an all-time order. Rankings and comparison verdicts are editorial judgments, not official decisions by a club, league, federation or governing body.

Sources and fact-checking

We prioritize official clubs, leagues, competitions, federations and venues for current facts. Established news organizations and specialist records can provide historical context where a first-party source does not answer the question. Detail pages list the principal sources consulted. Before publication or a substantive update, names, dates, teams, results and other checkable claims are reviewed against the best available evidence.

Updates

Published dates record the original release; updated dates change only after substantive revision or verification. Active-player and seasonal pages receive closer review than stable history pages. We do not change dates solely to make an older page appear fresh.

Photography and illustrations

Photographs identify real players and places. Each page provides image sources, photographer credits, license links and any crop or resizing notes. Comparison portraits show the players separately and do not imply they appeared together. Dated stadium captions describe when the photograph was taken.

Some general football features and social previews use an AI-generated editorial image created for The Top Football with OpenAI ImageGen. These images are labelled in the image credits. The ground is imagined, even where the image has a realistic photographic style; it is not evidence of a real match or stadium. Club emblems are used for editorial identification, with trademark and source notices.

Corrections

Confirmed factual errors are corrected under our corrections policy. A disagreement about a ranking position is considered editorial feedback unless the underlying evidence is demonstrably wrong.

Independence and conflicts

Sources, clubs and competitions do not approve our conclusions or purchase ranking positions. We do not publish betting, casino or paid-link content. Any future sponsorship or material relationship will be labeled where readers encounter it.

Advertising and affiliate disclosure
