Career path

Nesta captained Lazio through the most successful era in the club’s history before moving to Milan in 2002. At Milan he added two Champions Leagues and remained an elite reference despite recurring injury problems.

Playing style

He was quick enough to recover but preferred not to need the recovery. Nesta adjusted his feet, protected the route to goal and tackled at the moment the attacker had least control.

International record

Nesta won 78 Italy caps and belonged to the 2006 World Cup-winning squad, although injury ended his tournament during the group stage. Earlier finals at Euro 2000 and youth level established him as a central figure of his generation.

All-time ranking case

If the ranking rewarded pure defensive technique alone, Nesta would have a plausible case to move even higher. That is the basis for placing him at number 6 in our best football defenders of all time ranking.
