A new winger for a changing Madrid

Madrid had five consecutive European Cups behind them when Amancio arrived from Deportivo La Coruña in 1962. Some of the players who had won them were leaving, and the club needed an attack that could succeed in the years ahead.

On the right, says the club’s official profile, he brought pace and skill. The Galician Wizard nickname makes sense for a dribbler, but he scored too: Madrid records 155 goals in 471 official appearances over fourteen seasons. Friendlies are listed separately, outside that official match count.

The equaliser against Partizan

When Madrid returned to the European Cup final in Brussels in 1966, Partizan took the lead before Amancio brought Madrid level. Fernando Serena then scored the winner, giving Madrid their sixth European title.

That equaliser has a central place among his playing honours in the club’s account of his career. Madrid recovered the title with Amancio in the team; he had played no part in the previous five. His responsibility belongs to this later generation, and keeping the distinction makes it easier to understand.

Spain needed extra time in 1964

His important international goal had come two years earlier. Against Hungary in a level EURO 1964 semi-final, Amancio scored in extra time to send the hosts through. Spain went on to beat the Soviet Union 2–1 in the final at the Bernabéu.

UEFA’s tournament review names him in its team of the tournament. Marcelino scored the final’s winner from Jesús María Pereda’s cross. Amancio had a decisive semi-final goal of his own; his case has no need to borrow credit from the next match.

Fourteen seasons and work beyond the first team

His spell at Real Madrid lasted until 1976 and brought nine Spanish league titles. UEFA records 42 appearances and eleven goals for Spain. There was a long career around the European final and EURO semi-final, and those completed records help to show its length.

After his playing career, he coached Castilla to the second-division title in 1983/84, then took charge of the first team the following season. That was a coaching achievement; the playing case has to be judged separately. He cannot take personal credit for every trophy his younger teammates won, either.

Amancio’s place among right wingers

Amancio is fifteenth among our best right wingers of all time. A clear job on the flank, a long spell at the highest club level and goals that changed important matches support that place. A nickname and a list of Madrid medals are not all his case has to offer.

Paco Gento supplies the famous left-wing counterpart in Madrid’s history; Luís Figo represents a later kind of control from the right. Amancio belongs between those eras on his own terms, as a quick, skilful wide attacker who also reached the scoring positions his team needed him to find.
