Career path
Puyol rose through Barcelona C and B before becoming a first-team fixture and captain. He played across the transition from the late 1990s to Rijkaard and Guardiola, winning 21 major club titles before knee problems ended the career.
Playing style
His football was direct: close space, win contact, protect a teammate and reset the line. Pace and concentration let him cover both centre-back and right-back without reducing his aggression.
International record
Puyol won 100 Spain caps, Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. His header against Germany sent Spain to the World Cup final and gave his international story a decisive image.
All-time ranking case
Puyol represents the defensive work and leadership underneath Barcelona and Spain’s possession-era success. That is the basis for placing him at number 13 in our best football defenders of all time ranking.
