Career path
After emerging at Napoli, Cannavaro reached his best club rhythm with Parma and later played for Inter, Juventus and Real Madrid. The 2006 World Cup split his career: it completed his Italy case and carried him to Madrid as the Ballon d’Or winner.
Playing style
Cannavaro attacked the ball rather than waiting for the striker to establish contact. His leap, acceleration and reading of the delivery let him win contests that looked physically unfavourable.
International record
He captained Italy to the 2006 World Cup and finished with 136 caps. Seven matches in Germany, with almost no defensive mistake, remain the clearest concentrated evidence for his place here.
All-time ranking case
Cannavaro is the reminder that centre-back dominance can be built on timing and competitive force rather than size. That is the basis for placing him at number 7 in our best football defenders of all time ranking.
