Career path

Beckenbauer became the defining figure of Bayern Munich’s rise from ambitious regional club to European power. His later years with New York Cosmos helped carry that authority into the NASL before a Bundesliga title with Hamburg completed the European chapter.

Playing style

He defended by seeing the next phase early. Instead of treating recovery of the ball as the end of a defensive action, he stepped into midfield, carried through pressure and decided where the next attack would begin.

International record

West Germany gave Beckenbauer 103 senior caps and the captaincy. The 1972 European Championship and 1974 World Cup made the international case complete; he later won the World Cup again as a coach.

All-time ranking case

Every modern discussion of ball-playing centre-backs and libero systems eventually returns to Beckenbauer because he expanded the job rather than merely mastering it. That is the basis for placing him at number 1 in our best football defenders of all time ranking.
