Career path

A Stuttgart loan gave Lahm top-flight minutes before he became a Bayern constant. He retired at 33 with eight Bundesliga titles, six domestic cups and the 2013 Champions League rather than allowing the standard to decline visibly.

Playing style

He defended with angles and information. Lahm scanned before receiving, closed the inside pass and could invert into midfield because his first touch and decision speed survived pressure.

International record

Germany gave Lahm 113 caps. He scored the opening goal of the 2006 World Cup and captained the national team to the 2014 title before retiring from international football immediately afterward.

All-time ranking case

Lahm is a tactical reference for modern full-backs because his value moved across positions without becoming vague. That is the basis for placing him at number 14 in our best football defenders of all time ranking.
