Career path

Koeman won in the Netherlands with Ajax and PSV before becoming a central figure in Barcelona’s Dream Team. His extra-time free kick against Sampdoria delivered Barcelona’s first European Cup in 1992.

Playing style

Few defenders have altered matches from distance so often. Koeman stepped into midfield, switched play, struck set pieces and converted penalties, making the deepest outfield player a direct scoring threat.

International record

Koeman scored 14 goals in 78 Netherlands caps and won Euro 1988. His passing and goal threat gave the Dutch side another creator behind its celebrated midfield and forward line.

All-time ranking case

The scoring total is extraordinary, but the deeper legacy is a defender trusted to dictate possession and decisive set pieces. That is the basis for placing him at number 19 in our best football defenders of all time ranking.
