Six seasons that changed Liverpool
Southampton to Liverpool was Sadio Mané’s move in 2016; Liverpool to Bayern Munich followed in June 2022. He finished his Liverpool spell with a completed record of 269 competitive appearances and 120 goals. On the club’s honours list are the 2019 Champions League, the 2019/20 Premier League and the 2019 Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup, plus both English domestic cups in 2022.
Mané joined while Liverpool were still chasing a return to the Champions League, before their strongest habits were established. He stayed in the attack throughout their progression to winning that competition and then ending the thirty-year wait for a league title.
He finished the next season at Bayern with 12 goals from 38 competitive appearances, a Bundesliga title and a German Super Cup. Before the 2022 World Cup, injury interrupted that Bayern spell. He missed Senegal’s tournament as a result. In August 2023, confirmation came from Bayern that he was moving to Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
From the right flank to the left
Liverpool initially used Mané on the right. Mohamed Salah’s arrival in 2017 brought a switch to the other side, which Mané discussed in a Liverpool interview that November. Roberto Firmino worked between them. The front three became one of the defining features of Jürgen Klopp’s team.
The move made Mané a right-footed attacker receiving from the left, able to drive inside towards goal. When play developed elsewhere, he had opportunities to attack the far side of the penalty area. Getting past the opposing right-back was therefore only one part of his contribution. The run made before a cross or pass was just as important.
Klopp’s account of the shape in 2018 had Salah further forward and Mané sometimes working as a midfielder. That asymmetry helps explain the defensive work Mané did alongside his goals. When possession changed, he had to stay connected to the team, not wait high up the pitch for the next break.
Scoring without abandoning the team
In our tactical reading, Mané’s effectiveness depended on how quickly he joined an action. He could beat an opponent with the ball. After passing it, he was quick to move again. He was also quick to attack the gap behind the defence or close an opponent trying to play out.
His movements connected different jobs for Liverpool. He could take the attack forward by carrying the ball. Without the ball, his run could occupy a centre-back. Pressure after a turnover could mean the next Liverpool attack began nearer goal. Liverpool could use the same player in more than one way, with his value growing from the connection between those jobs.
The league scoring peak is clearest in 2018/19: Mané’s 22 Premier League goals brought a Golden Boot shared with Salah and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Liverpool won the Champions League that season too. The Premier League title followed in the next campaign, evidence that the team could hold its standard over a full domestic season as well as win in Europe.
Senegal’s first AFCON triumph
Mané helped bring Senegal their first Africa Cup of Nations title at the 2021 edition. Cameroon hosted it in early 2022. He scored three goals during the tournament, then took the decisive penalty in the final shoot-out against Egypt and converted it. CAF’s choice as the tournament’s best player was Mané.
Senegal brought a different pressure from the club game: the country was still waiting for a first continental title, and Mané was among the players expected to make the difference. The winning penalty is the image that lasts. The award recognised more than the final kick, acknowledging his contribution across the tournament.
Why he qualifies for the left-wing list
Mané moved into the centre of Liverpool’s attack during the second half of 2021/22. That change belongs in an assessment of his position, but it doesn’t displace the substantial spell on the left before it. There, his scoring and movement, along with his defensive involvement, had supported major team achievements.
Our best left wingers of all time list has Mané fifteenth. His case is strongest when the position includes the whole attacking job: doing his part in the team’s work, then getting to the place where the next chance will appear.
