Career path

Ramos broke through at Sevilla, became a long-serving Real Madrid captain and later added spells with Paris Saint-Germain, Sevilla again and Monterrey. The Madrid period dominates: sixteen seasons, four Champions Leagues and repeated late goals in knockout matches.

Playing style

He defended aggressively and accepted risk. That produced cards and occasional disorder, but it also let his teams hold territory, attack set pieces and play with a centre-back who could change the score.

International record

Spain gave Ramos a national-record 180 caps. He was part of the side that won Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, first as a full-back and then centrally.

All-time ranking case

Few defenders have a stronger collection of final-stage moments; the debate is how much weight those moments should carry against the volatility. That is the basis for placing him at number 5 in our best football defenders of all time ranking.
