A charitable idea became a football club

Brother Walfrid had a practical purpose for the football club formally constituted at St Mary’s Church Hall in Glasgow on 6 November 1887. He wanted it to raise money for people facing poverty in the city’s east end. Celtic FC Foundation’s account places that intention at the beginning, before there were sporting successes to explain.

The first matches came after the club had been organised. In accounts of Celtic, 1887 belongs to its formal beginning and 1888 to its early playing life. These dates follow one another through the history. They are not contradictory foundation claims, even though reading them without the sequence can make them look that way.

Lisbon made the team European champions

The team remembered as the Lisbon Lions won the European Cup on 25 May 1967. It beat Inter Milan 2-1 in Lisbon. The team name and that date give supporters an immediate reference point in Celtic’s history, with the result and the city of the victory remembered together.

Jock Stein’s team had achieved something that people far outside Scotland could recognise. There is a place for that win in the all-time managers discussion, and a longer history behind the team itself. Celtic’s charitable beginnings, Glasgow home and the supporters’ attachment to Celtic Park all preceded the European campaign.

Glasgow supplies the setting, not a single explanation

Long local histories accompany the meetings with Rangers that make up the Old Firm rivalry. Their intensity cannot justify assuming a single political or religious outlook among supporters. People can follow the same club, and share the same fixture, for different reasons of their own.

Celtic can be a local community attachment and a football name recognised internationally at the same time. Brother Walfrid’s original purpose and the Lisbon Lions’ sporting achievement describe those different parts of its history. There is room for both, without either losing its importance. The account extends well beyond the club’s most prominent opponent.
