A football idea in Glasgow

Rangers’ anniversary history dates its beginnings to March 1872 and four young men: Moses McNeil, Peter McNeil, William McBeath and Peter Campbell. It places their decision during a walk in Glasgow’s West End Park, now Kelvingrove Park. They were planning to organise a team.

They were setting up a city team, without a ready-made professional competition waiting for them. The stadium crowds associated with Rangers came in later generations. In the club’s account, the founding project and those larger matchdays belong to different stages. Its eventual size should not be read back into the first one.

Barcelona supplied the European landmark

Rangers’ major European trophy came at the Nou Camp in 1972. The Scottish Professional Football League’s historical account records a 3-2 win over Dynamo Moscow in the Cup Winners’ Cup final. The setting was Barcelona, a long way from the team’s Glasgow home, with a continental trophy to be won.

The record needs the full competition name. This was the Cup Winners’ Cup, a tournament separate from the European Cup. Describing it as though the names were interchangeable would put Rangers’ victory into the wrong competition’s history. It has an achievement of its own to describe.

Ibrox and the Old Firm

For many supporters, knowing Rangers means going to Ibrox. Squads change and seasons pass, while people keep returning to the ground. That meeting between the team on the pitch and the people watching is part of their experience of the club, as well as the setting for a matchday.

There is a place for Celtic in that account of Rangers. The shared Glasgow history and the matches between them are followed in our Old Firm guide. Here the foundation of Rangers and its European landmark take most of the attention.

Both help explain the club’s place in a discussion of the biggest football rivalries. Two established teams, with histories and supporters of their own, give the fixture its importance. There is more to either club than the opponent waiting on the other side of it.
