A merger gave Rome a new club
AS Roma was created in 1927 from Alba-Audace, Fortitudo-ProRoma and Roman. The names explain why its beginnings cannot be reduced to a group simply choosing a new badge. Existing sporting institutions and their histories became part of a new football club.
Roma’s recent account distinguishes 7 June as the foundation date from 22 July as the club’s annual celebration day. Keeping the two roles clear resolves much of the apparent disagreement between dates associated with its birth. The city, colours and name supplied the common identity for what followed.
The Scudetti belong to different generations
Roma’s first league championship came in 1941/42. The next arrived in 1982/83, after a long wait, with Nils Liedholm’s side giving supporters a new championship team to remember. The third came in 2000/01 under Fabio Capello.
Those separated dates are important. Roma’s history contains major peaks rather than an uninterrupted sequence of league titles. Francesco Totti’s place in the club and Cafu’s contribution to the 2001 generation help give that later championship a human shape, while earlier teams belong to their own periods.
A European trophy with its own identity
The 2022 Conference League final brought a different landmark. Roma beat Feyenoord 1-0 through Nicolò Zaniolo’s goal, winning the first edition of the competition. UEFA describes it as the club’s first major UEFA competition title. That wording preserves the distinction from earlier success in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.
José Mourinho’s role places the campaign beside the careers considered in our all-time managers guide. For Roma supporters, the result also belonged to a broader relationship with their team and city.
The derby with Lazio is another expression of that attachment. Both clubs bring distinct origins and achievements into the fixture, making it part of the wider football rivalries discussion. Roma’s story needs those opponents, but it also needs the league-winning and European teams that defined its own achievements.
