A sporting society before a football institution

Luigi Bigiarelli and his companions founded Società Podistica Lazio in Rome on 9 January 1900. Its original identity was associated with running. The football history came out of that sporting society, so the modern team cannot simply be placed, unchanged, into the account of its first day.

Roma came from a merger in 1927, well after Lazio’s foundation. Rome and a fierce fixture bind the clubs together, but they started separately. Each has an institutional history of its own to bring to the rivalry.

Two championship teams

Under Tommaso Maestrelli, Lazio won its first Scudetto in 1973/74. That championship belongs to the players and circumstances of its own period. The next league title came in 1999/2000, giving supporters a different championship generation to remember.

For a way into the football of that later team, there is Alessandro Nesta. He was an important figure in it, and his defensive career takes the account beyond institutional dates. His profile follows the player through his career. Here the attention stays with the club and the team he represented.

The continental peak of 1999

The Cup Winners’ Cup win came in 1999, followed by victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Super Cup. Marcelo Salas scored the decisive goal in that second match, as UEFA’s account records. United had won the Champions League: the meeting brought together the winners of two different European competitions.

There are separate records to keep here. The Cup Winners’ Cup and the European Cup were different competitions. The Super Cup was another encounter, played between continental winners. Each has a name and a place in Lazio’s account without needing the trophies merged into one record.

The derby is followed alongside other major fixtures in our football rivalries guide. Lazio brings its early sporting roots to that meeting, along with two championship teams separated by years and a European peak still important to its identity. That is one participant’s history within the shared fixture.
