A club older than the FA

On 24 October 1857, Nathaniel Creswick and William Prest founded Sheffield FC. Members of a Sheffield cricket club had already been playing informal football. The founding account published by Sheffield Chamber puts the inaugural meeting at Parkfield House in Highfield. They were organising a club before there was a national association to supply common laws for the game.

That beginning earns Sheffield its place in our oldest football clubs guide. Sheffield Wednesday has a separate history, as does Sheffield United: neither name describes a later version of Sheffield FC. Sharing the city’s name can leave the much older club overlooked when people think of football in Sheffield.

Sheffield rules belonged to a developing game

Football clubs were still using competing codes when Sheffield began. The club drew up its own rules and played matches under them. In FIFA’s history of the Laws of the Game, Sheffield and Hallam are among the clubs that retained Sheffield rules into the late 1870s. Sheffield’s place in the ancestry of association football comes with that distinction about the game it actually played.

It is a harder contribution to picture than a championship-winning team. You can watch a final and count the trophy; an old rulebook’s influence is less obvious at a match today. Sheffield helped shape football while people were still deciding how to play it. Being founded early does not, by itself, make a club better on the pitch than those which came afterwards.

The Amateur Cup gives the story a result

Sheffield also had a cup win to celebrate. The United Counties League’s club history records the 1904 FA Amateur Cup final: a 3-1 victory over Ealing at Valley Parade in Bradford. There is a result and an opponent to put beside the founding year so often used to sum up the club.

FIFA celebrated Sheffield’s 163rd anniversary in October 2020, recognising a surviving football institution with a long history. It was no claim about the size of its present support or the strength of its squad. The stadium guide takes that history through its places, which can matter to a club even when its neighbours’ matches receive more attention.

FAQ

Is Sheffield FC the same club as Sheffield Wednesday?

They are separate clubs. Sheffield FC began in 1857; Sheffield Archives dates Sheffield Wednesday to 1867. Sheffield United is distinct from both.

Why is Sheffield FC called the oldest football club?

FIFA recognises Sheffield's oldest-club status. Sheffield was formed independently in 1857, unlike Cambridge University AFC, which advances an earlier claim as a university club.
