Sheffield Wednesday
Sheffield Wednesday began in 1867 as a club separate from Sheffield FC. Its later highlights include the 1991 League Cup and three Arsenal finals at Wembley in 1993.
Summary
A League Cup win in 1991 sits alongside Wednesday's much older Sheffield roots. Later final appearances add another part of the story, beyond the nineteenth-century founding date.

Wednesday has its own place in Sheffield history
Wednesday’s formation dates to 1867 in the Sheffield Archives account. It shares a place in the city’s early football history with Sheffield FC, founded a decade before it, and Hallam. They are three separate clubs. Wednesday is not a new name taken by the older Sheffield FC, a distinction worth making in a city that appears so often in the game’s beginnings.
The same archive guide connects the Owls nickname to Owlerton, where Wednesday played from 1899. The name carries some of that local history to people who know the club from much further away. The formation year is included in our oldest-clubs chronology; age alone cannot settle a comparison between Sheffield’s clubs.
A Second Division team won at Wembley
Ron Atkinson took Wednesday to the 1991 League Cup final and a 1-0 win over Manchester United. John Sheridan scored the goal. As the EFL’s retrospective records, Wednesday were a Second Division team, winning a major trophy while playing outside the top flight.
United’s much larger trophy collection is part of what makes the result stand out. Wednesday reached a national final and beat them. That achievement belongs to Atkinson’s particular team, on that occasion; it need not be stretched into a judgement about which club should always be considered greater. The circumstances tell us more than the score would on its own.
Arsenal became the recurring final opponent
Two years on, Arsenal were the opposition in another Wembley League Cup final. The EFL records a 2-1 Arsenal win, with John Harkes scoring for Wednesday. There was more to come between the teams that season: the FA Cup final and then its replay. They had met in three Wembley finals by the end of it.
Put those seasons beside each other and the history contains both a trophy and repeated disappointments. The winning final of 1991 was followed by the opportunities of 1993, which ended differently. Wednesday’s 1867 beginnings explain its place among the early clubs, but the later cup runs and familiar stadium are other ways supporters know it. One old founding date or one photograph with a trophy cannot cover the whole account.
