Career path

Carlos Alberto built his Brazilian club reputation with Fluminense and Santos before joining the New York Cosmos. At Santos he played alongside Pelé; in New York he helped the NASL project turn famous names into a winning side.

Playing style

He played right-back with the technique to combine inside and the power to finish attacks. The 1970 final goal is famous because the strike completed a move that captured his role perfectly.

International record

Carlos Alberto won 53 official Brazil caps and captained the 1970 World Cup champions. His goal against Italy closed a 4-1 final and became the defining image of an already complete tournament performance.

All-time ranking case

The raised Jules Rimet trophy and the final goal can overshadow the broader point: he was a sophisticated two-way defender before the role became fashionable. That is the basis for placing him at number 18 in our best football defenders of all time ranking.
