Jairzinho inherited Brazil and Botafogo’s number 7 after Garrincha, but he did not copy the role. FIFA describes a winger with power, pace and flair who regularly left the right flank for central scoring positions or crossed to the opposite side. Mario Zagallo’s assessment was even broader: physically, Jairzinho could resemble a right winger, midfielder and centre-forward in the same passage of play.

It also credits him with the 1967 and 1968 state championships, the 1964 and 1966 Rio-São Paulo tournaments and the 1968 Brazilian title.
