Three clubs became one

Aberdeen, Orion and Victoria United joined forces on 14 April 1903. There had been an Aberdeen before: that earlier team was one of the three merging clubs. The present institution began with their coming together, while each predecessor has a place in its roots.

The club’s archive records Stenhousemuir’s visit to Pittodrie in August 1903 for the first match. The new Aberdeen had its home there. Later European teams would make the name familiar outside Scotland, with the ground connecting them to the club’s first season.

Gothenburg put Aberdeen above Real Madrid

Alex Ferguson took Aberdeen to Gothenburg for the Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1983. His team came away with a 2-1 win over Real Madrid after extra time. It remains their most famous continental result. UEFA recalls the difficult conditions as well as the task of beating such an established European opponent.

The European Super Cup followed later that year. It was a separate competition, so the two wins need their own places in the record. Aberdeen’s official history sets them alongside a wider spell of domestic success. Gothenburg was an extraordinary result for a team already achieving at home.

Ferguson’s later Manchester United record can dominate discussions of his career. Aberdeen had already supplied a European success of its own. That earlier achievement deserves space in the all-time managers discussion.

The Dons have their own Scottish story

Celtic and Rangers often provide the introduction to Scottish football. There are important periods that their histories alone cannot explain. Aberdeen supplies one: a team from the north-east building its own domestic challenge and going on to win on the European stage.

That great era cannot account for every Aberdeen season. The city has a club formed by a merger and a familiar home in Pittodrie. The European success has its place alongside them: a result which people well beyond Scotland can recognise as an achievement.
