What “right now” means

This is a form ranking, not a career award. The October 14 review covers the 2025/26 club season, World Cup 2026 and completed 2026/27 matches through October 13, plus published team news for October 14. Club form carries 35% of the order and the World Cup 30%; elite-match evidence, work with the ball and availability divide the rest. The completed club season remains the base while the new campaign supplies fresh evidence about form and roles.

That split prevents one tournament from erasing a full club season. It also gives the World Cup enough weight to move a player when the evidence is overwhelming. For the career argument, use the separate ranking of the best defenders of all time.

What changed in the October review

Arsenal have started the Champions League with a 1-0 win at Napoli and a 3-0 win over Lille. Gabriel and Timber started the Lille game, and Timber supplied the breakthrough before receiving UEFA’s Player of the Match award. Their league form has been less comfortable: a 3-0 defeat at Brighton was followed by a 2-1 win over Leeds on October 10. Saliba’s situation is different: the Premier League’s October 13 injury update still lists a back problem. His No. 4 position rests on the completed title season, and a longer absence would weaken it.

Cubarsi started Barcelona’s 4-1 win at Galatasaray on October 13, after the club had won its opening eight league matches. That keeps the World Cup award winner involved in another winning European side; the results themselves are not proof of flawless individual defensive displays. Laporte remains at Athletic Club, whose current player record lists six league appearances in 2026/27. Spain’s match records also show Cubarsi and Laporte starting together in the October 6 Nations League win over Croatia.

Paris beat Le Mans 3-1 on October 10 to reach 11 points from six league matches, when Mendes was absent from the squad. He is back in the travelling group for Manchester City on October 14, alongside Marquinhos, Pacho and Hakimi. Being selected supports availability; it does not establish match fitness or a result from a game still to be played at this review’s cutoff. Their places continue to lean heavily on last season’s European run.

Van Dijk’s new-season case is less convincing after Liverpool’s 3-0 home defeat to Manchester City on October 11. The wider evidence still keeps him in the final two places. We retain the order this month, with Saliba’s availability and the Paris defenders’ next European tests the clearest reasons it could change.

The evidence behind the Top 10

Why Gabriel is No. 1

Gabriel Magalhães has the strongest evidence across the whole window. Arsenal won the Premier League with 19 clean sheets and 27 goals conceded, while his own season produced 209 Fantasy points—the competition’s highest total for a defender. UEFA’s technical observers also selected him in the Champions League Team of the Season.

The conclusion is editorial rather than mathematical. William Saliba gives Arsenal recovery speed and calm progression; Gabriel adds box defending and set-piece threat. The combination of a title, the strongest league defence and European recognition moves Gabriel narrowly ahead.

How the World Cup moved Cubarsi to No. 2

Pau Cubarsi has the best tournament case. He started all eight matches for Spain, the champions conceded once, and FIFA gave him the Best Young Player award. He does not jump Gabriel because this ranking still gives the longer club season more weight, but the gap is small.

Why four Paris defenders make the list

Paris retained the Champions League with different defensive jobs working together. Marquinhos and Willian Pacho protected the centre; Nuno Mendes and Achraf Hakimi could advance because that platform held. A list that treated every defender as the same kind of stopper would miss why the unit worked.

Centre-back versus full-back

Centre-backs begin with space, duels and protection of the penalty area. Full-backs must still defend their side, but the modern role also asks them to carry, overlap and create an extra player in midfield. The closest omissions

Alessandro Bastoni, Dayot Upamecano, Jules Kounde, Marc Cucurella, Ruben Dias and Dean Huijsen were the hardest cuts. None is being written out of the argument; the final places went to players with clearer evidence across the completed club season and World Cup. The October review keeps those names in contention as the new-season sample grows.
